Referees and Psychology

The controversial penalty calls in France-Norway and Australia-Brazil over the past few days are as good an excuse as any to shamelessly promote an article I wrote about a year ago for Howler Magazine. Issue 14 had a section devoted to referees, and I wrote a piece about what recent research tells us about the psychology of referees. Then-editor George Quraishi even interviewed me on the Howler podcast, Dummy.  You can listen to me talking about my findings by clicking on the podcast link below.
