Though FIFA didn’t make any official declarations, COVID-19 delays and a winter World Cup have combined to create a remarkable window of women’s international football this month. While the European Championship is clearly the top event, North and South America as well as Africa are also hosting international tournaments that will determine the participants in the 2023 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand (the Women’s Asian Cup was played at the beginning of the year to determine AFC World Cup qualification).
Overall, July will feature 100 women’s international tournament games, including six consolation matches (with World Cup qualification implications). There are only three days in the month without women’s international football, and four days (the 8th, 11th, 14th, and 18th) will feature eight different games. While no one would pretend that all of these games are important, it remains a remarkable testament to the growth of the women’s game.
EDIT: Including the OFC Women’s Nation Cup, July features 117 games including seven consolation matches. There are only two days without football (the 1st and the 28th), the 17th is added to the list of 8-game days, and the 18th becomes a 10-game day (note that because of the placement of Oceana in relation to the international date line, games listed as taking place at 11:00 PM CDT are actually being played at the beginning of the following day, internationally speaking; and are counted as such).
Having said that, a 9-team tournament which plays nine games to eliminate ONE team, where only the winner will earn a spot NOT in the World Cup (co-hosts New Zealand having taken that place) but only in February’s Inter-Confederation Playoffs, where only two of of the contesting nations are ranked in the top 90 (FIFA or ELO–in comparison to 6-7 of the twelve WAfCoN competitors and all but one of the eighteen Copa América Femenina and W Championship sides), and where only three nations have a larger population than Montenegro; such an event might reasonably be characterized as a developmental tournament masquerading as international competition.
Kudos to the OFC, however, for making live streams and full match replays of all games readily available on their website, and also for making highlights available. That makes it pretty easy for you to judge for yourself, if you’d like. I’ve included links to the highlights in the fixture list below.
Here’s a complete fixture list, with highlights for completed games and US TV/streaming info for upcoming ones. All times are CDT, so recalculate if you’re on the coasts.
