June on Your Couch

couch_potatoWith the European season winding down, it’s certainly going to be a relief to be able to turn my attention away from football. For the next two weekends, I mean. Because this June is going to be absolutely mental.  Things will start out pretty easy with the Copa America Centenario kicking off on June 3rd. It’s actually pretty mellow for a major tournament, rarely scheduling more than two games on any given day.

But come the 10th, Euro 2016 kicks off in France, and football in June pretty much loses its mind. Time zone shifts mean that American viewers will frequently have five separate game, neatly spread from an 8:00 AM kick-off to a 9:30-11:00 PM final whistle. That’s a long day of football.

In fact, it’s a lot of long days of football, more or less in a row. All in all, it means 76 tournament games in the month of June (77 if you believe that 3rd place games are a real thing). The heart of the matter is a 16-day run between June 11th and the 26th. Within that period, six days will have 5 games played and five days will have 4 games played. The remaining five days in that period have another 7 games spread over three days, with the 23rd and 24th the only empty days on the schedule. And even after all that, you’ll need to stick around for the final 6 games of the Euros (effectively the quarterfinals on) spread over the first ten days of July.

After that marathon, I think we’ll all be happy to catch our breath. Thankfully, Olympics football won’t start until August, so that’ll be plenty of time to rest up, right?

Here’s the full schedule for the Copa and Euros, in US central time.  Feel free to modify as necessary for your location.  UPDATE (6/2/16): The original schedule included the Euro schedule with Eastern times for the games; they have been revised to Central times.
